About EZ Grow Our History

EZ Grow's History

Edward Zamecnik began his farming career in 1954, sharecropping for his father-in-law, Noel Ghesquire, who was born in Wavelhelm, Belgium. In 1955, Edward and Jenny purchased their first farm at the 1771 location and expanded their operations in 1968 by acquiring a second farm. Their son Darryl returned to the family farm in 1983 after graduating from the University of Guelph, joined by his wife, Helen. In 1987, Darryl discovered a flavorful strawberry variety from Belgium and began propagating it on the farm. By 1999, Helen and Darryl started small-scale plant propagation for Southern US farms, achieving first-year sales of 134,560 bare-root plants. Dusty Zamecnik, after graduating from St. Francis Xavier University and gaining corporate experience, returned to EZ Grow in 2012 to help initiate a greenhouse plant production program, which officially commenced in 2017. The greenhouse construction progressed with Phase 1 completed in 2019 (1 acre), Phase 2 in 2020 (2 acres), and Phase 3 in 2021 (5 acres). In 2023, a new facility was built, adding 19 acres for a total of 25 acres dedicated to greenhouse and protected culture plant propagation.
